In a ruling that has sent shockwaves across Lagos and beyond, Justice Serifat Sonaike of the Lagos High Court, sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, has sentenced Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver Andrew Ominikoron to death by hanging for the rape and murder of 22-year-old fashion designer Bamise Ayanwola.
The judgment, delivered on May 2, 2025, marks a critical turning point in a case that drew national attention following the tragic events of February 26, 2022, when Bamise went missing after boarding a BRT bus operated by Ominikoron along the Lekki-Ajah Conservation Expressway.
After extensive hearings, the court found the defendant guilty on all four counts, including rape, conspiracy, and murder. The prosecution, led by the Lagos State Government, was praised for presenting evidence that proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Delivering the final sentence, Justice Sonaike declared:
“For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you shall be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”
This long-awaited verdict brings closure to the family and supporters of Bamise, who had campaigned tirelessly for justice.
