Nigeria has lost a distinguished figure in both politics and academia. Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo, former Governor of Oyo State and father of media personality Kemi Olunloyo, has passed away — just days ahead of his 90th birthday, which was set to be celebrated on April 14, 2025.

A man of extraordinary intellect, Dr. Olunloyo was a renowned engineer, mathematician, historian, and a respected voice in Nigeria’s sociopolitical space. He briefly served as the Governor of Oyo State in 1983 under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), before the military coup that dissolved the civilian government.

Known by many as a “genius at large,” he left behind a rich legacy of public service, scholarship, and thought leadership. He remained active in academic and political discussions well into his later years, inspiring generations of Nigerians with his brilliance and principled views.
