“From Ridicule to Redemption: Tunde Onakoya Pledges to Sponsor Little Girl’s Education”

In a world where cruelty often overshadows kindness, stories like this remind us that compassion still exists.

Chess Master Tunde Onakoya has stepped forward to sponsor the education of a young girl whose mother was publicly ridiculed for taking her along to sweep early in the morning. The video of the incident, which circulated on social media, sparked outrage—but more importantly, it caught the attention of a man who understands the struggles of poverty firsthand.

In a heartfelt post, Tunde Onakoya shared his own painful childhood memories:

“My mother used to sweep people’s houses and gutters in 2016. It hurt too much that I could do nothing financially to stop her. I often insisted on going with her, just to help fetch the water she needed so we could finish quicker and get back home before daylight. I didn’t want anyone to see us. The poverty that pushes one to hide their labour in the dark is a painful one.”

With empathy shaped by experience, he emphasized that the only humane response to this situation is compassion, not condemnation.

“Yes, that child should not be working. But more than outrage, what she and her mother deserve is compassion. The only humane response is to help.”

And help, he did.

Tunde Onakoya pledged to take full responsibility for the girl’s education through university, hoping to ease the family’s burden and give the child a future beyond the struggles of today.

A Lesson for Us All

What was meant for shame has been turned into a blessing. This is a powerful reminder that privilege can blind us to the struggles of others, but kindness can restore dignity.

May this story inspire us all to look beyond judgment and extend a helping hand whenever we can.
