A heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves across Delta State as 24-year-old upcoming music artist, Paul Obukowho, has reportedly died after being arrested and tortured by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Delta State Police Command, Asaba.
According to reports obtained by SaharaReporters, Paul met his untimely death after he visited the RRS office at the state police headquarters to inquire about the wrongful arrest of his 19-year-old friend, Prosper Odili.
On Wednesday morning, around 8:00 AM, Prosper Odili was reportedly picked up randomly by RRS operatives along Redeemed Road, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area. He was allegedly arrested without cause while walking with a friend.
The police then proceeded to search his house, but found nothing incriminating. Despite this, he was taken into custody at the Delta State Police headquarters in Asaba, while his friend was released.
Later that evening, Paul Obukowho visited the RRS office to understand the reason behind Prosper’s detention and possibly secure his bail. However, instead of getting answers, Paul himself was arrested, handcuffed on both hands and legs, and thrown into the cell, where he was allegedly subjected to severe torture.
The following night, Paul reportedly collapsed in the cell due to the brutal injuries he sustained. In a desperate attempt to save him, the police rushed him to their clinic, but his condition was beyond what they could handle. He was then referred to Specialist Hospital Asaba.
Paul’s tragic death has reignited concerns over police brutality in Nigeria, especially following the #EndSARS protests, which exposed cases of human rights violations by rogue officers. The RRS unit in Delta, formerly associated with SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad), has once again come under scrutiny for its aggressive tactics and alleged unlawful detentions.
Paul Obukowho’s death has sparked outrage, with many calling for justice and accountability from the Delta State Police Command. Activists and human rights groups have demanded an immediate investigation into the incident, urging the government to put an end to police brutality once and for all.
As the story unfolds, Nigerians are left wondering: How many more innocent lives will be lost before true police reform takes place?
