Lagos State has once again found itself at the center of public debate, with some individuals insisting that Nigeria’s “Centre of Excellence” has an unpleasant odor. However, the Commissioner for Water and Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, has firmly dismissed these claims, stating that Lagos is not “smelling” but rather evolving.
In a statement released this evening, Wahab emphasized the state government’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and urban cleanliness. He pointed out that managing waste and sanitation in a fast-growing megacity like Lagos requires structural solutions, not mere soundbites or political rhetoric.
The commissioner highlighted several initiatives aimed at modernizing waste management and improving sanitation across the city:
✔ Sustainable Waste Processing – The government is working on waste-to-energy solutions to reduce landfill dependency.
✔ Modernized Landfill Management – Efforts are being made to decommission outdated landfills and introduce better waste disposal systems.
✔ Cleaner Waterways – Programs are in place to clear drainage channels and prevent water stagnation that contributes to unpleasant odors.
✔ Structured Sanitation Systems – Increased enforcement and regulation of sanitation laws are ongoing to keep the city clean.
✔ Flood Control Measures – With the prediction of above-normal rainfall in 2025, the government is ensuring proper drainage maintenance to prevent flooding.
While Lagos remains one of the most densely populated and rapidly expanding cities in Africa, the commissioner insists that the state is making significant strides toward a cleaner and more livable environment. The government is focused on long-term sustainability, not quick fixes, as it tackles urban environmental challenges.
Wahab’s statement has sparked mixed reactions. While some Lagosians acknowledge the government’s efforts, others argue that more work is needed to address waste disposal, drainage blockages, and air pollution in certain areas.
